A beautiful castle town with rows of white walls, Namako walls, and black wooden fences
Castle Town of Hagi Castle
The castle town of Hagi Castle was planned with a layout like the grid of a Go board. The layout of the city remains unchanged to this day. The castle town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015. The castle town contains samurai residences, the homes of wealthy merchants, and machiya townhouses. Enjoy walking through this well-preserved castle town with the feel of an outdoor museum. Kikuya Yokocho, an area featuring buildings with white walls known as “Namako walls”, was selected as one of the top 100 most beautiful paths in Japan.
